Hurricane Maria brought its devastating power to some of the same Caribbean islands recently savaged by Hurricane Irma. On Puerto Rico, it was the worst storm in 80 years, causing major damage and cutting off power to the entire island.

With much of the island’s infrastructure damaged or destroyed by Maria and health services severely limited, Tom Cotter, our team leader in Puerto Rico, reported that hospitals and health centers were running critically low on supplies.

In response to urgent requests from health officials in Puerto Rico and Dominica, Americares has begun airlifting more than 7 tons ($3 million) in essential medicines to Puerto Rico and Dominica; the shipments include antibiotics, wound-care supplies, intravenous fluids, mental health medications and chronic disease treatments.

This project will raise $5,000 to help Americares deliver the critically needed medicines and supplies to the people affected by Hurricane Maria in order to help them remain healthy as the islands work to recover.

“Hurricane Maria caused catastrophic damage, and we are very concerned about the health and safety of survivors,” said Americares Director of Emergency Response Kate Dischino. “Every day our team is seeing hospitals and clinics with critical shortages of essential medicines. We are working to ensure doctors and nurses have the supplies they need to continue caring for survivors.”

Americares has deployed its team of expert emergency responders to attend to the urgent health and safety needs of all those affected by the storm. From chartering planes for large shipments of supplies, to hand carrying medicines to remote clinics, to connecting critical patients to the medical care they need, Americares is working around the clock to help the victims of Hurricane Maria.

Cost to help Americares deliver critically-needed medicines and supplies to people affected by Hurricane Maria: $5,000
