Donated towards $6000.00 Goal
June 1, 2018
In April of 2004, the KEYS Founder, Rob Silvan, walked into Columbus School in Bridgeport with a keyboard under his arm. There was no music in the school. No piano. No room to teach in, so Rob set up in the hallway and started teaching 4 piano students.
There was an instant wait list of dozens and dozens of kids. The wait list never got smaller. The more kids we taught, the more kids wanted lessons.
It’s still true 14 years later. We have 450 students on the KEYS roster, and reach over 600 students every year through our collaborations with our non-profit partners. We teach all the instruments- piano, guitar, all the strings, all the brass, all the winds. We have the only city-wide orchestra, bands and chorus. We’re in 22 Bridgeport schools.
In a district with 21,000 school children, the wait list grows. We have 8 entire schools waiting for us to begin or expand a program.
We have the teachers, the instruments, the know-how, the methods, the relationships. But we need to pay those teachers. Our annual cost per KEYS student to provide this well-rounded music education is approximately $600.
For $600, we can take a student off the waiting list. With funding for 10 students ($6,000), we can start a new school program.
Cost to fund a new school program for 10 students: $6000
