We’re crowdfunding summer scholarships for Art, Music, Dance, Cooking and Job Skills classes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and we need your help!

Recreational classes are crucial to the continued growth of STAR clients and enable them to expanded their experiences and enriched their lives while building their self-esteem, confidence, talents, and positive presence in our communities. Some of these programs include equine care and horseback riding with New Canaan Mounted Troop, Book Club at Grace Farms, Art and dance classes taught by the Darien Arts Council, Acting and theater classes taught at Music Theater of CT, Cooking Classes taught at Wakeman Town Farm- Tim’s Kitchen and the New Canaan YMCA and other recreational activities at the local YMCA’s, sports clubs, libraries and other venues.

The average scholarship is $150 per client OR program.

$1,500 will allow 20 STAR clients to get needed scholarships.

STAR was established in 1952 by parents who believed that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities were entitled to the same basic opportunities as other children. Today, STAR, Inc., Lighting the Way is a not–for-profit organization that has grown to include a full array of services for over 600 individuals with disabilities, from birth to their senior years and their families.

Services include early intervention services for infants and preschoolers; family support services; job assessment and training; recreation and leisure activities; and support to adults in group homes and apartments. Our mission is to create opportunities for individuals to live full lives with independence, freedom of choice and personal growth by providing support, services and advocacy.

As the number of our eager participants grows, as well as the ever-expanding range of fee-based opportunities, the need for scholarships always surpasses our available funds.

And new for this summer is our Job Skills programs for young adults!

Please take a look, make a gift, and share with family, friends, colleagues and on social media to help us fund this project!
