Help us provide free summer math and reading tutoring to local students, to close the achievement gap!
More than 80% of children from economically disadvantaged communities can lose one to three months’ worth of reading skills over the summer. Decreases in math skills occur as well. These deficits persist and compound, resulting in an achievement gap between these students and their wealthier counterparts. This program aims to prevent the summer slide for at least 25 elementary school students so every student can succeed in school.
The Homework HELP Program provides free tutoring to elementary school students at the Norwalk Public Library South Norwalk Branch. Tutors are selected to support, nurture, and guide elementary students. They provide structured one-on-one attention, encouragement, and direct-instruction of reading and math content.
Funds will be used to hire, train, and pay…
• 2 qualified, experienced tutors (1 for reading and 1 for math)
• 1 site supervisor (CT DOE Certified Teacher)
At least 25 students will meet with tutors two hours weekly over the course of eight weeks in the summer.
Cost to provide summer math and reading tutors for local children: $1,500
